5 Legal Must Haves For Your Course Sales Page

5 Legal Must Haves For Your Course Sales Page

One of the major things you have to do as a business owner selling products or services online in order to actually sell those offers is to write persuasive sales copy.

It’s one of the most important parts of your marketing process and effective copy could be the thing that makes or breaks your sales.

With that in mind, it’s easy for business owners to get caught up in what looks super attractive to their audience. They want to prove that their offer is THE thing to solve their problem.

So, they’ll often write the copy in a way that’s enticing enough for someone to click through to the sales page and that click may or may not equate to a purchase.

As a business owner myself, I totally understand the need to have great sales copy in your business.

But I also know that great sales copy doesn’t mean you just get to skip the legal stuff!

Without having a few legal must-haves present on your sales page, you’re running the risk of it actually being the thing that harms you and your business in the future.

So, if you want to craft a legally sound, yet still persuasive sales page for your course or something else that you’re launching or promoting in your business, you’re in the right place!

5 Legal Must Haves To Include On Your Sales Page

Now, I’m not writing in the sense of a copywriter teaching you how to craft your sales page.

After all, that’s not really my expertise. I’m writing this in the sense of what LEGAL aspects you should also be including on your sales page in addition to all of the fun and persuasive copy and structure that a copywriter would teach you.

There’s a place for it ALL!

  • Terms of Purchase

  • First things first, your terms of purchase. This is like the rulebook of your business that sets the foundation for how purchases in your business are handled. From payment details to course access, it’s the fine print material that everyone should read, but they often don’t.

That’s why you want your Terms of Purchase to be easily accessible and easy to read and understand so that when someone buys your offer, they’re doing so with NO question about what’s expected from them.

Nightmares of refunds and chargebacks? Both of those things can be avoided with this legal agreement alone.

So, take the time to craft a legally sound Terms of Purchase and if you don’t know how (or don’t have the time to DIY it), click here for The Boutique Lawyer’s plug and play template.

  • Privacy Policy

  • Next up, your privacy policy. I’ll talk about this one until the cows come home (disregard my southern reference - ifykyk 🤣🐄).

A privacy policy is a HUGE non-neogirable for not only your sales page, but your website in general.

This policy should be saved in the footer of your website and be displayed on every single page so that your audience knows how you plan to use the information you gather when they use your site, such as browser cookies or email subscriptions.

This one is huge, not only because it’s legally required, but mainly because the penalties that you can get hit with are massive…

We’re talking up to $7,500 per instance per visitor! 🤯

So, yes you can make a LOT of money through your courses and your sales page can help you do that, but you can also pay a LOT in fees if you don’t implement this one policy!

  • Course Disclaimer

  • When you’re selling a course of ANY kind, regardless of the information that you’re teaching inside, you want to make sure that you’re including a course disclaimer when selling it.

The reason for this is because it sets the stage for realistic expectations so that your customers never get the wrong idea when purchasing.

It’s your first chance to say, “Here’s what my course CAN do, and here's what it CAN’T.”

This not only covers you legally, but also builds a bridge of trust with your customers so that they never feel like they’re being led astray.

  • Refund Policy

  • I briefly mentioned refunds above under the Terms of Purchase, but not only do you want it displayed in your terms and conditions, you also want to have your policy blatantly stated on your sales page as well!

This removes any ambiguity for a potential customer and tells them the policy straight up so they know exactly what to expect when purchasing.

The way you choose to display this on your sales page is really up to you, but here’s an example of how I’ve chosen to do this on my Landing Sales Legally sales page:

I’ve displayed it as a blatant question in the FAQ section, so that it’s very clear and no one has to wonder or search for what the policy is.

And if you look closer, you’ll notice that I have a “no refund” policy for that offer specifically since it’s a digital product! If you feel as if you need a “no refund” policy as well and aren’t sure how to navigate that, CLICK HERE to learn more!

    1. Testimonials

Lastly, and typically one of the most common pieces of content you’ll see on a sales page, testimonials, case studies, or reviews.

But I’m going to take this a step further and say you don’t *just* need to display testimonials on your sales page – they also need to be testimonials that you a) have permission to use and b) are legit and true from actual customers.

SO many times I see people using fake reviews and testimonials just so they’ll have something to display on their sales page, but this is illegal my friend.

Your testimonials, reviews, and case studies need to be backed with a testimonial release form (meaning your clients or customers have said “yep! You can use my words.”) AND they need to be 100% authentic.
